A new stat for monsters is now there, the CR, Challenge Rating.
The CR is a rating on the overall difficulty of the monster, from 1 to 10, where 1 is the easiest, and 10 is the most powerful.
The CR is arbitrary. It isn't calculated from the player's stats, rather, it is attributed to monsters which have things that makes them particularly hard, such as high stats, high resistances, special abilities, etc... It doesn't take into account your own stats, equipment or build. So, Quazar is always a CR2 enemy, even if you're a zulgor with a ranged weapon(where he becomes more like CR0 ). Still, due to the way the monster stats now scales almost entirely based on their level, a CR2+ monster will remain worthy of it's rating if it's level matches the player's level or is higher.
The CR has an actual impact on monsters stats. Enemies of CR2 receives +25% to all attributes: stats, skills, AC and max hp, and that's in addition to their modifiers that are usually higher than normal enemies. CR3 is +50% to all attributes, CR4 is +100%, and it keeps getting higher. They also have faster speed growth. On the other hand, they are worth much more experience. CR2 is worth twice the experience, but CR3+ becomes exponential, where CR3 is x2x2, so x4 to experience. CR4 is x8, etc... Also, each level of CR above 1 increases the "item level" of any drops the monster may have by 10%.
Note that CR has no effect when playing the Monster race. Otherwise, some race would be way too overpowered. (that's already the case, they'd just be even MORE so! )
You will notice that enemies of a given CR are much stronger than those of the previous CR. A CR2 is much tougher to beat than a CR1. This is usually made up for by being rarer, but not always. You may find that you easily kill the CR1, yet struggle to beat the CR2. Likewise, being capable of beating CR2 is by no means a guarantee that you'll beat CR3.
The idea here is: choose your opponents wisely. Once you get that telepathy ability, take a look at those enemies. If you see a CR higher than 1, proceed with caution, and use strategy, abilities and don't blind rush, make sure you look at the 'R' screen for information about abilities. You never know what tricks they can pull off!
