I am currently working on an unarmed combatant. Can you guess what more than half of the magic items which drop are? (ok, probably not that bad actually) Weapons! Worst case so far was one boss which dropped 3 items, all of them weapons! Weapons galore, none of which I can use! I even have the devastator... although I wouldn't use it anyways unless i had a lot of health regen. But it gets worse. I have, at level 22, found 3 tweakable items! (counting one for sale in the black market). All of them weapons!

And I bet they were cool ones too! This is one little drawback of playing an unarmed fighter... it's hard to give up all these nice weapons! But fear not, you will eventually find some good gloves! (or save enough to buy a scroll of Magic Item, then enchant non-magical gloves! )

That's the life of an unarmed fighter.....
There are just so many more weapon types than armor so the RNG makes a lot more weapons, that and I think it is biased toward them a bit too.

This is interesting... i got a set of 32 tweakable bolts. At least I can equip them without causing penalties. I do find it odd that the number of items in the stack doesn't affect the cost of tweaking. The RNG is now my friend...

maybe off-topic, but on the weapon drop subject: I was farming worms for fun and profit on level 1 of the old cave and a boss white worm dropped the artifact sword 'orcbane'. I didn't think any artifacts but bee sting could drop on level 1.

As far as I know any item can drop any level. The odds of an out of level item dropping are lower....I think.

Well, the 'Orcbane' sword has a depth of 8 I believe, so it's not too deep. Besides, I believe bosses have a better drop depths, though I'll have to verify the code about this... But having a depth of 8 does not necessarily mean you can't find it earlier... it just means the odds are very low to find it before depth 8. So consider yourself lucky! You see, as far as I'm concerned, it seems I'm out of luck with artifacts. In 1.7.1, I went trough the entire game without finding one I think, not even Bee Sting! And things haven't changed in Portralis... well, I DID find Bee Sting, but... I don't always get it. On the other hand, in my last test of 0.1, I did steal a Holy Mace(4d5) in the black market. And then, I bought a scroll of Magic Items, and what did I get? It became twekable, and had it's damages increased to 6d6. So I was quite happy!

Ooooh---I didn't know whether a scroll of magic item could make an item tweakable or not. I suppose there's just a percentage chance.
Does anyone know whether you get better results from a scroll of magic item if you read it deep in a dungeon rather than on the surface? It seems the pval of items gets better as you go down, but I don't know how the scrolls work with that.

scrolls of magic item definitely net you better stuff if you read them deeper...

I'm sure though that I set these scrolls to generate an item based on your level instead of depth though... hmmm... I'll have to check them out. Otherwise, scrolls of magic items generates a magic item using the same function normal magic items are generated. So yes, you can get a tweakable out of it. If you're really lucky, you might even get a Special!

variaz, you're right about the scrolls, of course. I just did some experimenting. I guess my misperception was because I always go to the deepest level I can before reading them just to be safe. Now that I know, I'll read them at the surface just to be really safe...

And now it loves me. Not only did I acquire golden dragon plate mail at level 20 (then lost via death ) I found a blue-steel claymore on dungeon level 29. Great so far, extreme damage per attack at my level (27)... just really overpowering. Then I used a scroll of magic item on it. Tweakable, damage dice boosted from 16d14 to 30d20... pval 1. I had just enough money on hand to add the extra attacks ability. Now I just need to keep it long enough to make it eternal and I should be golden for quite some time. I'll miss the tweakable shield with spell reflection... but the damage dice are insane! Incidentally, with the block magic defender ability work with the block chance from sword skill?

Block Magic works with shields only. Urg, blue steel claymore on level 27 huh? Shouldn't be possible at all! Wonder if it may be a bug...

well, it may have been dungeon level 30 not 29. my player level is 27. I figured it was one of those 1 in a million drops or something. I assume the golden dragon plate mail shouldn't have been able to drop at dungeon level 20 either?
Here's the rarity line for the claymore. A:75/5:90/3:110/10. I assume the probability of various drops asymptotically approaches 0 as you move away from listed depths. Gold dragon plate with rarity A:100/6:120/4 should have been even rarer than the claymore.

Another part of the code that needs rewriting....
