I've been trying out a crafter/enchanter recently, but I'm a bit befuddled by the Defense Transfer skill, which is to say that I have no idea how an Item's 'level' is calculated.
I found that two AP in Defense Transfer (lvl 8 items?) wasn't enough to even transfer the armor off of a mundane Iron Helm [10, +0] - much less my crafted Steel Full Plate with unhealthily large bonuses.
It seems like my crafting would likely keep my items at a level far beyond what defense transfer would ever catch up with, even if I dumped every AP into it - or is the level calculation only applied on the base item type (steel full plate, crafting bonuses ignored?) - and if so, is there a way to see an item's level so I can figure out how many AP I'd have to invest to make full use of this ability?

The item's level is the item's depth, which is unseen in-game(could easily change though), but is the level at which the items starts appearing in the dungeon. The Iron Helm has a depth of 10, so you need Essence Transfer at level 3 to use it with an iron helm. Steel is depth 20, so you'll need 5.
Generally:
Bronze: 5 Iron: 10 Steel: 20 Mithril: 40 Adamant: 60 Titanium: 90 Blue Steel: 120
There are some exceptions, such as plate mails and full plates having a higher depth rating. Firearms and rods also have higher depth levels, as do some other items. Your steel full plate is 50.
I guess it would definitly be useful to display the item's depth in the item's info when you examine it.

Ah, that makes sense.
Yes, there are a number of game mechanics (particularly with enchanters and diviners) that rely on an item's level that would make it nice to be able to see those values in game, at least in the inspection text of an item.
