Newsflash demons need food too. Ok so Im doing ok with the new diviner..playing a demon (for the int bonus) got to level 11 and Im already a level 4 Diviner and Im kicking butt with my divination spells...doh dead...dead again...oops dead another time...no money...no items..no food...dead from starvation. Ok so now I cant do anything because I have no light source and its dark outside and I have no food so I cant live to wait for light. Nice set up. Good job me. Demon dies of hunger!
(Just thought everyone would be amused by the utter stupidity of this.)

;D However, here's a little trick to get you out of this situation, if you haven't deleted your character. Go to a low level dungeon, and kill a monster. Then, if it drops a corpse, use the 'h' command to get food from it. You can eat it. Then, just scum the stairway a few times for a couple of coins and buy a torch/lantern.

No no...didnt delete...dying sort of alleviates the problem since it sort of sets the clock back again...Just thought it was amusing. And yeah normally Id have done that (and have often enough) but finding a dungeon was problematic. As I said dying solved the problem (though I hate adding to the total deaths.)

Ok so I think Demons are now unplayable due to their -100% light resist....a single paladin on a low level (8 or 9th I believe) cast ONE light bolt and laid me low with over 400hp. just like that...its quite a come down from slaying things right and left to instadie to a lowbie with an uber ray gun. I only know it was a paladin because the Ctrl-P messages show thats what killed me. Seems like the Demon Diviner needs a rethinking. Perhaps since the game now has loads of these imps and pallys walking around nonvulnerable races are the way to go.
Oh and to be clear I have died more times with this one character than I have with any other character in past versions. Maybe its just my fumble-fingeredness but it seems like the game has gotten much deadlier.

What's your alignment? Paladins will be friendly to you if your alignment is 0 or higher. If your alignment is negative, only then will paladins be hostile. Looks like you just paid for your crimes. And I think Demons are FAR from unplayable. Light weakness can be painful, but there are much more dark-based enemies than light-based ones. And most light-based enemies like Paladins and Celestial Knights only attacks you if you're evil. That leaves you with just the Light Imps, Enslaved Angels, Light Hounds, Light Lords and gold dragons, and the later one would probably still kill you even if you didn't have a weakness. That's only 5 monsters. If you're evil, add the Novice Paladin, Paladin, High Paladin and Celestial Knight to the list, making it 9 enemies.

Yes I have a negative alignment if you remember....the thing with the killing an innocent townsperson by accident because I couldnt cancel the target? so Alignment = -1.
As far as numbers of enemies go ....I seem to run into a hostile light bearing monster every 5 levels or so on average which would be fine if they didnt have the ability to attack from hidden darkness.

Imagine the pain the other way around. Celestials are d**n hard at later levels when they're hit by hideously powerful darkness attacks. For food woes you might consider dumping a single AP into the summon creatures ability of the ranger. Summon a squirrel, kill it, eat it. An old vampire used this stunt to feed himself. Can you afford to spare the 1 AP? Might take several kills to get a corpse, but shouldn't be too hard.

Thats pretty funny but I never go ranger And finding corpses in dungeons is easy enough. The problem that happened was amusing (and thus post worthy) precisely because its not very common AND illustrates the annoyingness of day vs night in the game which serves NO other purpose. And I havent found that Celestials are all that hard later on. It is my fumble fingeredness that kills me often with Port as with other bands (but not as much because strangely other bands do not have the same lethal instakill situations at lower levels)

i don't usually go ranger, and neither did the old vampire, he got that 1 ap in summon monster, and saved all the rest until he could classchange to something useful. And night did USED to serve another purpose, back when vampires burned in the sun. They could actually respawn in day therefore instadying... almost as pathetic. Aren't the vampire traits still around in portralis? That would provide a use, albeit a small one. Maybe we should make light and dark spells dependent on time of day? One ould be stronger during the day then at night, which would give it another purpose.

was just an idle thought since you mentioned day and night serving no purpose. Would be complicated as hell to code anyway, and the player would have to constantly keep track of time. Wasn't very well thought out. i dunno, it just seems right to have day and night somehow, but it really should serve some purpose somehow...

Actually, it wouldn't be that difficult to code. But like Gando said, it's not a good idea. This would make Light-based and Dark-based characters much more difficult to play. Plus, all you'd have to do is spend turns resting, so in the end, it just adds an annoyance.
