I'm in trouble with the command "hire/befriend". I can't use it, 'cause I can't find it in the game. The only place I ever found it the newbs.txt. I plan to create a character with a high charisma and leadership skill. A character who make friends with the dwellers of Portralis rather than kill them. I can't do it without the proper command!
Another question is the experience. How can I get XP, when befriending all the monsters? Are there any ways to advance for a peaceful character in Portralis?

Actually, Hire/Befriend is gone now, and newbs.txt is obsolete. The Monster Mage, however, has a Dominate Monster ability, which you can use instead. And of course, you can use summon spells. You'll gain experience when your monsters kill other monsters. For a peaceful character, there are some benefits to having a high charisma. For example, you can easily enter the castle without any fights if you have a high Charisma. Also, assuming you play 0.3, there's an artifact that you HAVE to have a high charisma, or you'll miss it. You can't persuade the main quest bosses though, so you'll need to fight sooner or later. As I build the game, however, I plan on having more options for Charisma.

Ahh, then skills.txt is obsolete as well. Leadership offers a special benefit to the command. Perhaps that should be replaced by some other benefit?

Indeed. Thought I actually removed it though... Well anyway, Leadership already gives a great boost to monsters attacks, so I don't think it needs anything else right now.

Why had been removed it? And... May I trust to the return of my favorite command? I always seek the peacful ways - and the unusual ways too. But.. Must be always ready to fight for my (character's) peaceful way of life...

It was removed because obviously, it was weird to just being able to hire anyone. I mean, does an animal, skeleton, or a Sphere cares about money? Not really. Plus, it wasn't too useful anyway, paying huge amounts of gold for something that lasts only one level. Better use Dominate Monster instead, it's much better.
I understand about the roleplay aspect of the character though. Although right now, because it's still a beta version, there isn't much options for a peaceful character. But I'll be working more on quests and the development of the world, so I'll keep that in mind, and include more "peaceful" options.

Hmm... I think you are right about gold and dogs or skeletons. But an animal mostly accepts some meat or other food, a human interested to collect gold, a demon alvays trying to earn more power, for instance magical potions... And - of course - some of the monsters, like skeletons or zombies, never will join to you without the force of the magic. This is the chance to make friendship for a life (of the monster, anyway:) not for a level. (by the guide I read) Don't waste the great possibilities of that command! Let it bloom, and the gratefulness of all the players will owerflow your mailbox:)

Im currently tinkering with a (browser based) game Ive been working on for about 6 years (very slowly). One of the initial concepts of that game is a peacemaker who resolves conflict through peaceful mediation and skillful resolve. This is because my Dad asked me if I could add this in since its where his interests lay. All I can say is ....adding a really functional mechanism for leveling a peacemaker without resorting to killing by proxy is not easy, Im still working out the kinks for that one. Would be interesting to see how it could be done here.

By my opinion, every kind of denizens has a proper type of item to bribe. The value of items can be calibrated to the original amount of gold to bribe the monster. In this way, a character who wants to make friendship with monsters must carry an enormous amount of items. You may lower the prices of monsters to balance it. At last but not least you could make easier to make eternal friendships. More work for a peaceful character, but it may worth if the pets will follow him everywhere and not lasts only one level.
I hope it isn't too difficult to programming, and you will at least think over to restore my favorite command.
