What is pval and how is it works?

pval indicates the powerfulness of the item (power value). The higher the number the more abilities it may have and the better those abilities will be. In addition the higher the pval the most costly the item is and the higher the base stats associated with it are.

But now, pval is pretty much worthless, and only used for a few items like light sources. I think some abilities still talks about pval...they may need to be updated.

Abilities are now arbitrarily scaled, rather than tied to a common stat. You can get +5 con and +2 wis for instance. The closest analog is bonuslevel, but that's a local variable only used when generating items.
