This is a question for you, Variaz! I hope it’s not too personal. Well, I’m really interested in how you decided to create your very own game in the first place. What motivated you? Which games (roguelikes or other RPG’s) did you play before? Which one inspired you the most?... In short: How did it all begin?

It all began about 8-9 years ago on an old Mac OS 7.5.3 system. My half-brother gave us tons of CDs from magazines containing applications and tons of stuff. On one of the CDs, I found: Angband 2.7.2! I started playing, and... I instantly fell in love with the game. I liked it, as it was fun, unique... and quite challenging! I remember, I was proud of reaching dungeon level 4-5, and it was about as far as I could go! Now, when I got Internet, I searched the web, and found 2.8.3, a more recent version of the game, this time with tiles! Then, I got familiar with all variants, and eventually found PernAngband, which I really loved! Then, I got my PC, and learned to program in C. So I decided to take PernAngband source code, and add a race! Then I added a class. I played a bit with the various r_info, k_info files, and had fun. At a point, I decided to make more changes, more and more stuff was added... races, classes... the I decided to try multiclass! And I did it, and thus, NewAngband was born! Since then, I never stopped improving it. As my skills grew, I decided to implement more complicated stuff. I must say it took a while before I got something I really liked. It started from a mere add-on to PernAngband 4.0.9, to the NewAngband 1.7.1 you know today. It took time before I implemented all the stats systems, my own rules, etc... But when I finally did it, I was proud! And now, I'm currently making the biggest version release I ever made. This time, NewAngband will reach it's greatest glory of all time, with it's own universe, world, game mechanics, etc! I'm wondering, in fact, if I should rename the variant, like ToME did... Perhaps the next release won't be NewAngband, but rather Portalis. Wouldn't that be nice?

Yes, a new, special name for this new version would be most welcome. Heh, heh, since the game offers so much VARiety, and since its author is VARiaz, I’ve been kinda thinking about VARIABAND or something. ;D But seriously -- a special name, perhaps somewhat related to the story, would indeed be nice! Oh, and thanks for the history, Variaz!
