I'm trying to play windows version 1.7.1, but can not figure out these:
1.In the starting town, some people ('h' or 'P') come up to me and block my way, so I can't get anywhere (the path between mountains is only 1 cell width). Is there a command to talk to them, so that they allow me to pass?
2.Is command.txt help file accurate? For example, I can press shift + z to steal from monster, but there is no such command in command.txt. Also, ^Q is described as "Quit to next midi song", but then I press Ctrl+Q, I get to quest status window.

The "h" and "P" are Farmer Maggot and Marti Irahasi (how ever it is spelled), both are good to kill and will give a magic item or at least a good item. Neither of them can hurt you. They are a little hard to hit at 1st level and have a lot of HPs, but just keep holding the key down and kill them.
As far as the help file goes it is a little out of date, but Variaz said he is going to update it for 1.8.
Hope this helps, Nork

Yeah, it's all clear now. I was incorrectly assuming that those two guys are good and giving me quests or something.

If you encounter any more problems with the commands, try downloading the Quick Reference Card from the downloads section.

Why are cave spiders ('S') and novice rogues ('p') so dark? It's impossible to notice them, because they are dark letters on black background. Is this intended to be so, or is my display configuration wrong?
I can disable use_color option to solve this, but then I lose all colors...

Hm... They are dark, true, but are not *that* dark. I, for one, have no trouble spotting them.
Maybe it's only your monitor. Perhaps you should simply turn up its brightness a bit?

I have never had that issue either. I also think Lipa hit it right on the nose, try playing with the brightness and or contrast on the monitor. If that does not work then let us know and we will try some thing else

Increased video driver's brightness and gamma settings, now everything's visible. Just having high brightness and contrast in monitor settings didn't cut it, maybe because of crappiness of my old crt.

I noticed what lial said when making some new monsters! It seems "d" is very dark... but it could be my monitor too... Anyway, I will probably be using "D" instead of "d" as the color for dark enemies in the new r_info.

While I can not trust my myopic vision, but it seems to me that the darkest color ("D - Dark Gray") in Vanilla Angband is a bit brighter than in NewAngband. This color is used for black market symbol '7', cave spiders 'S', etc.
I can spot '7' in starting town in Vanilla quite easy, but for NewAngband I must increase video drivers gamma, etc. Does anyone else notice this?
But now that I discovered video driver's gamma controls, I change them even for Vanilla, because they make "Dark grey" color standout better against black background.

One more thing. If you are experiencing trouble with graphics, you may also want to interact with them (via the "%" command). You can change letters, colors, etc. Now usually I don't do that, but I *did* change the way "small grass" looked in ToME (I wanted to distinguish it from trees - they both used the same character). It was quite helpful actually... Anyway, this is probably not the best solution to your problem, but you *can* do a lot of things this way... Check it out! ...and my level 10 human mage character... with every death... is feeling more and more unstoppable... ROCK ON!!! ;D

I have some experience with the (ToME) r_info.txt. "D" is what the darkest visible monsters have while "d" is just black and used by utterly black things like the "space monster" and "Null, the living void".
