I happen to want to make my own variant (distant future) and I thought about dual weapons, which would be a starting must for me.
I remembered Hengband, a variant that already has dual weapons, and remembered seeing that feature in the ideas for 1.8.0.
Here are some other features in Hengband I love:
-Monster riding
-magic-eating; consume magic devices to store their charges as spells
-Seppuku: kill yourself for a high score boost (just sounds better than "ripe old age")
-A wilderness and world map
-A fleshed-out ninja class to take advantage of darkness, possible expansion on stealth
(Note: ninja abilities involve throwing and teleportation a lot, a source of some ideas that would compliment stealth and throwing very nicely)
Source code is in download section. The original version is in Japanese, so comments may not be in English. If necessary I can possibly assist with locating things through comments... I'm no good at programming but I can read Japanese somewhat.
