...this feels like an incredibly stupid and belated question, but I've been trying to work something out. When it comes to overcoming blocks, counters and resistances to magic/elements, what, besides the piercing spells, influences the effectiveness of magic? My particular issue is with Light of Life. I'm being blocked like crazy -- maybe 1 on 15 get through with mature dragons, for instance. The other part of my question is exactly what does spellcraft do for innate Monster powers and class-specific skills (like the aforementioned Light of Life?)

All magic attacks uses Int + Wis to help overcoming counters. There isn't much you can do but raise those stats.
Which is a problem at the moment. If you read the threads on the game's difficulty, you'll find that counters are currently overpowered, and something needs to be changed to prevent monsters from blocking 90% of your attacks.

Well, that at least explains my current difficulties. I've been raising wisdom quite a bit, but have neglected my intelligence. In previous versions, I didn't notice the problem as much because I tested multiple characters and my magic using ones would have good intel/wisdom stats. In this version, I've only played one character so far. So is this the same fix for Monster characters as well?

Actually, it's Int "+" Wisdom, it's not average. Raising either ones is fine.
This is the same for Monsters. However, the problem is not as bad for them, as their base stats are much higher.
My idea is to allow skills to influence counters as well for normal players and humanoid monsters. Essence monsters may or may not get this bonus, since they have very high base stats to make up for it.
