It seems like there should be a thread with part of this thought in it, but I couldn't find it. Currently, most weapons have a 'physical' damage type. A few, special ones have a different type. It is also possible, by enchanting, to have the potential to change the damage type. Currently, Randar Rockbeard will make you a couple special axes with a 'fire' damage type. I was wondering if it might be possible for him to be willing to change any weapon damage type to 'fire', though. I was thinking a charge of about half the weapon value and a red licialhyde(?sp) of depth of at least that of the weapon as a starting point.
Does anyone have any thoughts?

Hmm, interesting idea to make him more useful, but maybe the price shouldn't be a Nightmare Licialhyd. That's something you give to peoples you want to make disappear! ;D
But that's a good idea, I was looking for a way to be able to get more elemental weapons. Because ghosts and some 'E' gets really tough for pure melee characters. A warrior can get by using some spells to kill the early ghosts and spirits, but try taking on a planar phantom or an andraos and you'll see that your warrior's weak spells are useless.
Not sure if it's gonna be Randar, but an NPC that could offer the service would be helpful. Maybe create a new NPC, and have some townsfolks or guards be able to direct you to him. Maybe an Ivhalian NPC would be even better.

An NPC does sound like a good idea. Maybe you could get a reference to him after the thingyatrice quest or something. Also, would you be able to choose what element you wanted, or would there only be one choice?

That depends on how I make that NPC. Perhaps you would need to find a branded weapon, potion or crystal first(something that uses a brand) that has what you want, and that would allow you to get whatever element you need on the weapon. But yes, some choice would be great to have!

I like the idea of having to bring in something branded or of the damage type to make the change. In addition to what you mentioned, a book of a particular element or a corpse of a creature of a particular element or mixed element may be options.

I was wondering whether this would permanently change the damage type of the weapon, or if it would be activatable like ice weapons. Then again, maybe you could have your choice with activatable costing a lot more.

activateble brands is nice. Makes me think of my old glyph-blade ideas... Maybe being able to craft multiple brands to a weapon and choose one at a time to activate? Since my glyph-knight idea struck out i have been trying to come up with a nice item-based system for them, but i think someone MIGHT have just made them moot...
