Just what, exactly, is considered reasonable... I'm still new enough to the newer modifications of newangband (now portralis) as compared to other bands, to be a bit in the dark. In no other band would you be able to get your hands on an armor class of 20000... and you would NEVER die with that armor class in them... in here, not only have i achieved it, i'm taking a gods-d**ned beating with it... even AFTER casting blessing to increase it... What *IS* a reasonable AC for characters in the early, mid, lategame? (my beatings were in the flow, but not by things which were that powerful... just 10 or 15 levels my senior (and i being near 25)
Eagerly awaiting insight into this...

20000 isn't anything that special, actually.
At depth 40+, many monsters have hit rate close or even higher than that. Base monsters. Elites and Bosses will of course have more.
How a hit or miss is determined is: random(Attacker's hit rate) >= random(defender's AC)
With "random" producing a number from 1 to maximum hit rate/AC.
So if you have an AC of 20000, but monster have a hit rate of about 20000 as well, it will have 50% chances to hit you for every of it's attacks.
But it's also possible to have more than 20000 AC by that time. And it's also good to have more than one source of defense. Get a weapon with base AC for blocking or a shield, and it will make a nice difference. And abilities like Displacement/Diviner's Dodge can help as well. Also combine defense with a good hp to be able to take a few hits.

and for monsters? (which was my case) my main ess has a 70 or so AC (and a plus 15 or so enchant to it) but this doesn't really give me an idea of ROUGHly how much AC is acceptable at differnt depths... even a general guideline would help. (Short of combing through the info files for hit rates, after i figure out how to find those.) (Blessed AC was near 30-50000 depending on my equipment, HP was around 90000 by this time. (which was what i tackled quazar with)

30-50000 AC and 90000 is way too much for Quazar. For "acceptable" AC, here's roughly what you could aim for, for a serie of depth(this is good for both normal races and monsters): 1-9: Having it at at least 20 early on is good. 100-200 should be more than enough. 10-19: 500-1000 I'd say. 20-29: 2000-4000 should be good enough. 30-39: 5000-10000. 20000-30000 if you want to melee mature dragons without using hit and run tactics and if AC is your only source of defense. (but you should definitely have a shield or a defensive ability) 40-49: 20000-30000. For the late 40s, you might want 40000-50000. Early 50: I recommend at least 50000, and don't be afraid to go around 100000 if you need to. It might be higher in the future builds, as I make more 50+ enemies. Beware of the Shadow Queen, her hit rate is very, very high! Now, keep in mind that a lot of factors comes into play. The above recommendations are for normal monsters and uniques. Elites and Bosses will of course have higher hit rates. You might also need less AC if you're not too much exposed to melee hits and often keep your distance. If you use scrolls of blessing/holy chant, they can make a good difference, and you might need less defense/agility to reach the above scores. Also, if you have defensive abilities, high resistances and high hp, the above scores can probably be lower.
