Okay... so it's not really a startup crash, it only crashes when I hit "new" or "open". And don't tell me to try messing with the window options, i've had to reinstall it because I couldn't see the title screen due to how messed up i made it Anyway, i'm using Windows XP Home edition, but I've tried it on vista, it does the same thing. Also, I'm using Portralis 03 build 4, but have tried the other versions, too.

Make sure you have no read-only directories in the /lib directory. You can also try to delete it, and then reinstall it. Try rebooting your machine as well.
It has happened a few times to some other players(it has yet to happen to me, and I have yet to figure out why it happens), and it's been solved that way.

I made sure there was not a single read-only file in the whole /lib directory nothing happens. Also, when you say re-install, you mean re-unzip, right? I've tried that. Unless there's a installer, which I can't find anywhere... Also, I rebooted my system alot.

...I'm not sure what to try next. I've never had any luck reproducing this problem, and I tried it on an XP machine, a Vista Laptop and on my computer at work, and I've never reproduced this problem. A friend who tried it on XP as well didn't have the problem either... Anyone else who had the problem can help him? I'm clueless as to why it happens sometimes...

I was finally able to fix it by completely removing Portralis from my system, restarting, redownloading, and reextracting the archive. I had to wipe everything, so no keeping the old config files.

I did exactly as chall said, completely wiping all instances of portralis from my system, including zip archives, restarting a couple times, then redownloading. As the newest build extracted, I crossed my fingers and whimpered, and then finally minutes later clicked on file>new on portralis's shiny menu bar, and... it froze. I guess I might as well give up now, if anyone has any other suggestions, I'm willing to try anything. Thanks for the help, guys.

Hmmm...maybe try turning off your anti-virus, anti-spyware? Do you have any other programs that runs in the background on both machines? Failure on both XP and Vista makes me think there is something you installed on both machines that could interfere with the application...

I dont think its av software...that doesnt make sense. I had a problem when I first started using Portralis 0.2.0 (if you remember). This sounds similar. How I fixed it? Deleted and carefully extracted the files from the zip individually making sure not to copy the strange /directory bit inside. Also you need to be careful with the settings on the Menu Bar as some of them can make it hard to see what is going on.
Also if you try to use Open or New before the scripts have finished loading the results may be unpredictable. You will know when its ok to use those when the main window suggests you try them.

Another thought would be to change the program you use to extract the archive. If you use the same one every time, it may be making the same error during the extraction every time. If you use the standard windows method then you might try WINzip or 7zip instead.

Well, at work, we've seen our windows installers being affected by some AV software, and preventing them from working correctly. So you never know. Although I don't really think that's the cause of the problem either.

Yeah, thats because you are talking about installers AV programs have problems with installers...but here it is just a manually extracted zip file...no registry access at all and you can choose whatever native program you want to extract with...so the AVs should NOT interfere .

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's not AV. But I forgot to meantion a few things, guys: I can actually play it a little bit on my vista before it decides to crash and delete the character I was playing with's save file. Also, I haven't been using anything but WinZip. ...now that I think about it, I didn't use winzip on my vista; it doesn't have it. Also, hitting new game before the scripts started loading would be dumb. Don't worry, I'm not -that- impatient Okay, just tried unzipping it with WinRar- still froze. Well, thanks for all the suggestion, guys. It just seems like there's something I'm missing here that's probably pretty obvious...

Have you had this problem with any other bands? Or any programs for that matter? Im curious if it is something in your ram set up... Someone here mentioned about some of the more heinous Crashes Ive gotten (very strange things indeed) that ram might be a problem...while I doubt that is the case on my end your machines might have difficulty with that?
Anyway the fact that you can get it to play a little is progress.
Now onto another thing...you said there are no read only folders in your installation...did you check individual files? I found a few in the old Port install.

A last thought ...what processes are running when it crashes? Anything unusual?

Well, see, this is a very strange kind of crash- Portralis just instantly closes, then asks me if I would like to send the error report or not (the error report is a typical XP thing). But I can only play a little when it's on my vista- let me tell you, the moments I play are moments of sheer greatness. But the XP is the one I most have access to, so the thing is to fix it on my XP, which has the evil new-game crash we've been discussing.
Also, I tried looking at every single individual file in addition to the folders, none were read-only. But I'll go over them once more. And no, not any strange proccess that I know of. I'll end some then play and see if it makes a diffrrence.
