Or so it seems, from what I'm understanding from all those balance/underpowered/overpowered issues that have been going on around lately in various topics. Recent posts from various peoples have proven this:
- Melee is not good because it exposes you way too much to enemies.
- Ranged isn't good because it doesn't deal enough damages.
- Magic isn't good because it's too nerfed and summoning is bad.
There has been a couple of posts about how something X is overpowered versus something Y that is underpowered, thus making Y completely useless and obsolete and X being the only way to go.
Now, let me tell everyone this, because to be honest, I'm getting a bit tired of these balance/overpower/overnerf posts:
Portralis focus on features. There are many classes, many races, and each classes have a lot of different ways to play them. Is everything balanced? No. And it will never be, not with that kind of system. And it doesn't NEED to be, because this isn't a commercial multiplayer game where perfect balance is mandatory, but a free single-player open-source game with high modability.
So, it might come to a point where build X does 15000 damages, whereas build Y does 8000. But the boss has 5000 hp. So in the end, they both win, so is it really that important that Y be the equal of X?
And also, a lot of posts focus solely on the raw damages aspect of things(yes, including my own "math" posts). But there's a LOT of things to take in consideration. A few examples:
- Enemy counters. I don't think any balance posts ever took them in consideration. Millions of damages that are always blocked results in 0 damages being dealt.
- Enemy defense. Yeah, 70 Blunt, 430 Crafting produces less damages than 500 Crafting. But have you thought that in one single blow(usable in Combat Feat too), you can reduce defense to 0, and all your weaker blows will connect, resulting in MUCH higher damages than a normal attack that may fail 70% of the time on high def enemies?
- The time it takes to do stuff. Yeah, a level 100 blue/green/yellow is uber. But it's also very tough to level them up that high.
- We still only have one chapter done. A lot of things can(and will) happen in the future.
- Is it fun? X may be much better than Y, but if you're bored after 5 minutes of gameplay every times you try X, does that really make X better?
And that's just to name a few. The thing with the "underpowered" posts, or posts that tells peoples that only one thing will ever work is that they drive peoples away from trying these types of characters, and what doesn't work for one doesn't mean it won't work for another.
To judge a build, consider this:
Quazar is supposed to be beatable at level 25. With the current build you're playing, are you able to kill him at level 25? If so, then the build is viable. Build X might do it at level 23 and have an easier time, while build Y will need level 27 and will struggle a bit more. But in the end, both builds are quite playable.
If you beat Quazar at level 15, and then defeat Restless Deads and Prismatic Dragons at level 18, then yes, that build is overpowered. If you're level 35-40 and still struggle to beat Quazar, then yes, it's underpowered. But anything in the 20 to 30 range is fine in my book. Not all builds are equal.
The next main quest boss will aim for level 50 probably. Some will need level 40, some 60. The next one 75 probably. And the Final Boss will aim for level 100. Since the game allows leveling to 200, all builds will have a chance to defeat it.
So in the future, let's try to make this forum more fun by telling peoples how you managed to defeat the monsters will build Y, instead of trying to tell how easier it would have been to defeat them with X. And I'm not saying I didn't do the same, I'm the one who made the "math" posts, and I don't want to do it anymore, it's really not fun.
