Knife -Used mainly for utility purposes such as cutting things like rope and wood, and carving foods. (3-6" long, maybe 1" broad.)
Dagger - A nobles weapon an inch or two longer than a proper knife and perhaps a bit wider. Used as a sort of honor weapon when carrying something larger would be considered too hostile. Some daggers can be as wide as your hand and almost twice as long. (6-9" long, 1-4" broad)
Longknife - Used in place of a dagger if you might need to kill something, dress a kill, do rugged out door work. (10"-1.5' long 1-1.5" broad)
Shortsword - used by roman foot soldiers and known as drusus and gladius as a close weapon after javelins and spears were used up. (2-2.5' long 2"broad)
Rapier - Of the many dueling swords used in the late medieval period and onwards to the industrial revolution, this one endures as a symbol of lithe yet deadly steel. When you see a movie with Zorro weilding a sword while swinging around dueling guardsmen this is the sword he weilds. (4'+long .75-1.5" broad with a razor sharp edge and tip and a fancy crossguard often with a basket on the hilt.)
Broadsword - A little big longer than a short sword and quite heavy the broadsword was used by heavy infantry to deal with heavily armored foes. (3-3.5' long, 3-4" broad)
Longsword - a later medieval invention, a longer narrower sword than the broad sword with a pointed end for thrusting between arrmor plates. Often used one handed...sometimes but not often two handed. (4-4.5' long 2-3" broad tapering to a point)
Bastard Sword (or in the highlands Claghmore/Claymore) A very large weapon with a wide pommel which provided a grip for the 2nd hand when weilded two handed. This was the favored weapon of the scottish clans among others. (5'+ long, 2-4" broad)
Twohanded (or Great sword) Used by the swiss these monsterous blades were extraordinarily heavy and required immense strength and alot of training to weild properly. (6'+ long, 3-4" broad).
