This just came up in a thread in the Suggestions/Comments forum, but I thought it might be nice to mention it here in a little more detail.
Grraa was having frustrations about throwing his boomerang because it was at the bottom of the inventory list, so the letter designating it kept changing as he picked up loot or used potions and scrolls up.
You can use a number to designate an object in your inventory if you inscribe the object with a number designation correctly.
the inscription works like this...
Use the '{' command to start inscribing, then choose the object to inscribe.
to inscribe a number that you can use with a specific command (such as 'v' for throw) you inscribe @v1
The @ symbol is for designating a number
the v is the command you want to use with that number
the 1 is the number you want to use with this object.
so if you had 3 boomerangs (different brands?) you could put @v1 on one, @v2 on another, and @v3 on another, then to throw the first one type v to start throwing, and 1 when it asks "which item do you want to throw?" the 1 works instead of having to look for the letter designation for that item's inventory location.
Back in newangband I used to use rods with one character, and I liked to swap out different crystals (I had agility 30 so it was 0 time to swap, very nice) so I put @w0 on both my crystals. that way when I wanted to swap crystals quick I could just hit w0, and whichever one was in my inventory was selected and worn, and the other went back into the inventory. This was quite nice as I would sometimes find crystals I wanted to keep and sell, so I didn't have to worry about accidentally wearing the wrong crystal.
It works with multiple commands too. If there is a potion that you want to be able to both quaff and throw (not sure if one like that exists, this is just an example) you can put @q0@v0 on the inscription. then v0 will throw it, and q0 will quaff it, regardless of inventory location.
another important inscription is the ! inscription. this forces portralis to verify if you are going to do the following command to that object. So if you like an object a lot and don't want to accidentally drop or destroy or sell it... put !d!k!s in the inscription, and then if you ever accidentally choose it to drop, destroy or sell, it will come back with a verification "Are you sure you want to (drop/destroy/sell) that item? (Y/N)" before it continues with the command. This is a little silly you might think because destroy already verifies, but this way you get a double verification... it can set off a red flag if you are in automatic pilot mode (come on, you know you get that way with portralis and other angbands some times... just admit it and use the ! inscription
I know there are other inventory control inscriptions, but I don't remember them, perhaps someone with more angband expertise could jump in this thread and fill us all in?
I hope this tutorial helps someone avoid a keypress mistake death some time
