I don't think I've seen anything on this subject specifically, so I thought I'd throw it out. It is also possible you can do this somehow right now, but I don't know how to access it. Would it be possible to have an overland travel ability so you wouldn't have to walk through every above ground map zone the slow way? It is just really slow to go between towns and known important locations in the regular map screen. I really don't want to think of how much of a pain it will be once there are more places to go to.
I believe hengband, I think Tome, and, possibly, some of the others have this mode.
I definitely do like having an above ground, though, and I would rather have that than not.
Anyway, just something to think about.

It could be done rather easily actually. However, the thing I don't like about it is that it makes the overworld travelling so quick that it becomes almost pointless to have an overworld at all. Plus, I don't want all the towns to be visible on a map, I want peoples to be able to find them. Fast travel this way ruins the feeling that the world is big, and kills the fun of exploring and finding new places. Also, I plan on having more stuff in the overworld than there is right now in future versions...
What I was thinking is a more realistic approach to this... Like, stables or ports where you could get transported by horse or ship to another town. For example, in Fidac, there could be a stables to transport you directly to Jindar, and Jindar could have a big transport network to all the other four major cities! For a price, you would instantly get transported. More realistic, and more fun, as it would allow fast travel to the main places, but will not kill the exploration feel.

That makes sense. I wonder if it would be possible that the routes between major cities could be inherently known (after all, in the game world, the major cities would be well known) but quick travel to any other location could only be done after the location was found.
Since there is overland travel, I was wondering if there should be at least a few overland nasties, at least in slow movement mode. Especially in some of the outlying areas, it would seem reasonable. Then again, perhaps overland nasties could be a birth option for those that did or did not want it.
