I like the new tweakable items. It seems to work well to eliminate the ability to spend a relatively little money to make your character completely resistant to just about everything.
The only thing about it I thought a little annoying was that you couldn't choose what damage brand you wanted. Since it was limited to a relatively small 200 to start with, it wouldn't seem unreasonable that you could choose, even if the cost was increased quite significantly. Still, this is a minor thing, and I like the new system much better.

Is this the latest beta? I haven't found any tweakable items yet and wondered whether Variaz had taken them out at this stage. I am currently in the Undead dungeon.

You will not find tweakable items till around level 20 (most of the time).

Actually, tweakables starts appearing at level 15! It's specials that only starts appearing at level 20!

I forgot that the specials didn't start until you got to lvl 20.
I noticed an ocean spear that was tweakable but could gain experience. Does anyone know if any kind of tweakable weapon could theoretically be able to gain experience, or is it just a few select ones?
Also, can any items other than weapons gain experience? I seem to think it was only weapons, but it would make nearly as much logical (if that even applies here) sense that any ego item could have a theoretical chance to do so if weapons can. I'm not concerned one way or the other, but it seemed like something interesting to think about.

Perhaps armors could gain experience from getting hit? Afterall, that's what armor does right? On a side note, if gloves/gauntlets/etc can be branded for use in unarmed combat, why can't a random brand be added in the tweaking?

This is probably beating a dead horse, but I've noticed that in Portralis leveling weapons still only gain experience if they kill something with a standard weapon attack, not including any branding. *ponders* This could be a design feature, I suppose, to encourage someone to be good enough at the weapon to earn the improvements. Still, in my opinion, it's hard to get them to level if branding and special attack kills don't count toward leveling.
