(First of all, what I'm about to write is not intended at all to be fixed any time soon. These are just a couple of suggestion that IMHO would add to the game's general appeal.)
Magic system, as I said many times before, is excellent!!! This, along with the multi-class system, is one of the strongest New Angband characteristics. To make the whole system even more user-friendly, however, I would add a couple of new options:
1.) I think that there should be a screen somewhere (perhaps under the (C)haracter tables, or via special command) that would list all of the current known magical effects. Just for quick reference.
2.) Then, this is perhaps more important, it would also be very nice if you could browse through the current spells you have. Of course, you can always hit 'm' and 'c', but all you get that way is a list of spells with no characteristics whatsoever. What I have in mind is something that would work pretty much the way book browsing works in other Bands.
An example: you press a key ('b' is still unused) and the list of current spells is displayed. Then, and this is the most important part, you select one of the spells, and a message displays the characteristics of the spell: which effects are used, radius level, how much mana does it take, and (this is what I miss the most) how much DAMAGE (if any) the spell does. This last part IMHO is the most important – to see the damage!
What do you think about this?

I agree with both your points. Magic system is GREAT but it lacks some usability

not to mention, that, currently, hitting m then c to see your spells, and not casting one, still wastes a turn. found this out the hard way when standing next to a crature that 'dealt double damage in physical.'
Being able to see the spell effects would be nice. I never know if i should memorize a book or leave it, or pick it up to sell, until i can check, and by that time, i am back in the town.
Not that im very knoweldgable, but the 'b'rowse idea sounds like it would be... difficult to program, and variaz would already have to change a lot to get a spell effect area. (How about, not on the "C" screen, but on the "~" menu?)

Actually, a "browse" command to know what your spells do is not too hard to code, and would be quite useful. But it's not like I will do it in five minutes, so it will have to wait until after 1.7.1. As I said in a previous post, I aim to release 1.7.1 this weekend.
