Another thing I'd like to see is automatic screen-centering while playing (like ToME). I didn't found such option in the menu.

It's not implemented, and won't be in 1.7.1. While this could be more convenient for some, I don't think it's a high priority feature.

I was about to suggest this option, until I seen it had already been suggested. Personally, it is much easier to play the game when you don't have to 'L' all the time to move the screen. I know it adds significant delay to the game, but I think most of us have computers where it isn't even noticeable.
I seen your reply that it isn't a priority feature, but I would like to suggest it again anyway.

I often have the problem where I'm in a narrow hallway fighting a large group of monsters. I'm just a few cells away from where it would recenter, but I don't have a way to get there. I like playing magic oriented characters or monsters (especially dragons) and use lots of area spells. In these situations I almost invarialby die, either because I cast the spell and there was a magic returner off the screen that I could see or because I didn't and was overwhelmed. I assume that the screen is supposed to follow the cursor if you "L"ook or "*"target but mine doesn't.

I have the same problem (I think I mentioned this once before)! The problem is that I can't target/see an off-screen monster...
Appart from auto-centering, it would also be nice (I mentioned this many times before also) if you could at least *MAXIMIZE* the main window! So if you run on, say, 1024 x 768 resolution (like I do), you can see much more of the dungeon... Every other Angband variant has this (you can maximize), and I *really* miss it in New Angband.
Variaz, would it be hard to implement this maximize feature?

To move the screen around just use the L key and it will move to where you tell it to go, just like you were moving your character. So if you are in a place where you would like to see the room in front of you, just move the screen up there and you will be fine.

It doesn't for me. I can use L to look at stuff already on the screen but it doesn't scroll to let me stuff off-screen. Could be a problem with the expand_look option, I guess. It's one option I always use and I've never been able to scroll with L.

EDIT: I just realized that he meant "L" not "l". Yeah I can use "L" to shift the screen around.

Yeah, you can "L" around, sure. But that's not the problem! The problem is, as Chall T. Dow said, that you can't EXAMINE ("l") or TARGET ("*") an off-screen monster!!!

I see that this seems to bother a lot of peoples... Personally, I never had problems with screen centering, the 'L' key always worked fine for me. That said, auto-centering like ToME would certainly be a welcome feature. And I understand that not being able to examine offscreen monsters can be a problem, considering they might be elites or bosses...
I'll look at this, and see what I can do.

What about maximizing the main window and looking (l) and targetting (*) off-screen? Could these be implemented too (if it's not too hard to code, of course)?

There is a difference between L and l. "l" will look around at things you can see (any thing on screen if you expand the look command). "L" will move the screen to a new position on the map and when you are done with the command it will move to the closest position available to your current screen position while keeping you on the screen.
Hope this helps, Nork
