This is it!!! At last, I have found it! ;D
From NetHack to ADOM, then Angband, Z Angband, NPP Angband and Quickband, and then finally ToME. It was a long journey for me. In the end, ToME was pretty much everything I had ever wanted from a roguelike. There were some small details I was missing, of course, but I seriously doubted I’d ever find a better game… And behold! I found NEW ANGBAND!
This is my first real post, emotions are high, so I tend to be verbose.
Okay, I’ve played this version for only about five hours or so, but I must say that so far I’m absolutely thrilled about just how great this thing is! It has most of the elements I’ve always missed in the other roguelikes, and I was so happy to see that someone has finally implemented those! Of course, there may be some small issues to fix, add or change, but it’ll be plenty of time for that later. The most important thing so far is that the project has started on the right tracks!
So what do I love that much about New Angband?
- Stats and skills system is EXCELLENT! It is really great to have this kind of control over the character. And switching between classes – marvelous! In other bands, I was often afraid to experiment with some of the more “extravagant” classes, but here, in New Angband, there’s no need for fear!
- Magic system and custom spells deserve a Nobel Prize! I almost fell of my chair when I learnt about this! Brilliant, ingenious!
- Reincarnation is also a great idea. Sure, you lose your stuff, but you keep the level and stats! However, I’d add an option here – more about that in the next paragraph…
- Damage / hitpoints / defense equations found in the help files! At last! Since equations alter from game to game, it’s really good to finally know what it’s all about, and not only speculate about it.
- Elite/Boss monsters! Though perhaps a bit hard in the early levels, they are fun and add to the diversity.
- Money dropping! AT LAST!!!
And perhaps a few suggestions so far:
- Maybe there should be an option after death like “Do you want to resurrect? Y/N” This is because sometimes I would like to start over in the way other Bands handle this – with old preferences and complete recall knowledge of the previous character, but with fresh mind and body – level 1 exp, basic items... Now it's very annoying to start over, because you have to reset all
the options, windows... Think about this.
- Somehow you should make it able to maximize the window over the entire screen, like other Bands.
- I think there should be at least a bit more verbose descriptions of the items when you (I)nspect them. The way ToME describes them, perhaps.
- An option to save current preferences to a file would also be nice.
Now let me conclude this with one small request:
Please, don’t stop working on this project!!! Live forever, if you have to, but don’t stop! ;D I’m sure that in time this version could reach and even surpass ToME in both complexity and popularity! New Angband’s future is as bright as any can be!!!
Keep up the good work! I salute you!
Be well!
