Good idea! And perhaps you should post the review to some other gaming communities, too. Like Home Of The Underdogs…
Well, I think the review should look something like this:
First, there should be something said about the variant that it’s based on (ToME, in this case) and then some basic characteristics: one town, no wilderness, one dungeon, random and permanent quests.
Then, each one of the most specific characteristics of the game should be explained in its own paragraph:
The most important feature is that there is no classes to begin with, and that all the stats are initially the same. The player then levels those up however he chooses to (like Diablo). You can choose whichever class you want, and you can always change to other classes if you wish during the game. To sum up, you have COMPLETE control over the character; no other variant comes even close to this!
Skills and abilities are also an important part of New Angband. A few words should be spent on that.
Magic system is one of the most ingenious features, so here should be fully explained that there is no books you need each time to cast a spell. Instead, you create your own spells based on the magical effects you learn, altering type of spell (cold, fire…), damage, radius...
And of course, the resurrection! It’s important to know that when character dies, he can resurrect in town. All the equipment and inventory is lost, but the stats, skills and levels are preserved! And, most importantly, everything that you left in your home (including money, which now can be dropped) is still waiting for you there!
At the end there should also be mentioned that this game is very reach with magical items and artifacts. On the other hand, it also tends to be much harder than other variants.
You should conclude with homepage and forum addresses.
This is just my idea of the review. But if I’d read something like this when I was browsing through the Thangorodrim variants section, I’ll be probably enjoying this game for almost a year now!
Be well!
