the windows distribution only supports graphics. here are the steps i took to get an ascii build using bcc (i assume that bcc is already installed and the environment is configured correctly for bcc): 1. download and unzip newangband 1.7.0 windows binaries, libraries, and source. 2. delete 'src/*.cfg' files 3. rename 'makefile' to 'makefile.bak' 4. copy 'makefile.bcc' to 'makefile' 5. in file 'main-win.c', delete line '#define NOCTLMGR'. that line gives problems to bcc. 6. in 'makefile', delete '-DUSE_GRAPHICS' 7. in 'main-win.c', delete 'init_graphics()' method. 8. in 'makefile', add '-Od' to 'CCOPTS'. this will allow town 1 to work. 9. in 'cave.c::mapinfo()', at the very end, move 2 lines: (*ap)=a; (*cp)=c; after this line: #endif /* USE_GRAPHICS */ this will display the player character correctly. 10. in directory 'src', run 'make clean install'

That can be useful information... But really, to disable the graphics, you can just do it from the "Graphics" menu to get the old Ascii chars back. Oh well, I suppose if you don't want the graphics available at all, your method could work... Thanks for posting anyway!
