I've tried evolve on a lesser ghost, skeleton mage, and ghoul. It caused a crash on the latter 2, the first one turned into a wailing phantasm, then crashed when I cast it a second time.

Hello! Have you tried the solution I sent you via e-mail? I am curious, whether it is worth anything...
I was unable to compile it under MS Visual Studio C++ Express, so I cannot confirm it myself. The compiler first reported a huge number of warnings (some of which were quite serious, like using uninitialised variable and so on) but in the end it failed on some MS include file - I am sure that this one is my error and has nothing to do with your code.

I haven't touched that bug yet. Yesterday, I was too focused on beating the current 0.2 boss! But I haven't forgotten about it, don't worry.
