I can still see the hitpoints for ELITE type monsters, but for BOSS types I can't tell how many hitpoints they have left. The number readout below the type is just missing. I can get a rough idea by looking at the boss, but this only gives stuff like 'slightly wounded', 'almost dead' instead of the actual number.
This is in the second beta version.

I think that's an actual feature. It's been like that for as long as I've played the game.

Yes, somewhere it mentions this is intentional to make the bosses even more challenging.

This is, of course, itentional! That is to raise your stress level when fighting one! And don't expect the major quest bosses of NewAng 1.8 to display their hp either!

You can always check the Boss hitpoints by using the "x" command to examine the Boss. Not sure if this is intended!
Variaz, is there any way that you can see if an Elite or Boss is Magic returning before attacking them?

Oops!! The 'x' command is NOT supposed to do that! I remember, when debugging, adding this command to cast the spell "Scan Monster" for free! But thanks for reporting this... this 'x' command will be removed! It makes the Scan Monster spell useless!
As for magic returning bosses... just use the look command to look at them, and either press 'r' or look in the recall term window, and check the list of abilities. All the boss abilities will be displayed.

Not sure about that, but I will check. But what about Elites? The recall window doesn't give any details of magic returning etc.
BTW, "x" is not listed in the main list of commands (command.txt) but it is shown in the NewAngband Reference Card on the Download page prepared by Lipa, so if you remove it, remeber to get this updated as well..

Just checked again. The recall window does not show the Abilities that the "l" (look) followed by "r" displays! No wonder I have never realised what abilities these have got as Ialways have the Recall window active so I don't have to press the keys.

Err.. sorry, if you mean 1.7.1, then no, the abilities are not shown in the term window. They are in 1.8 though... Heh... I'm so focused on 1.8.0 that I forgot that peoples still play 1.7.1!! ;D Sorry about that.
