When trying to use a character I created in the June beta 1.8 release in the new beta2 release, I get an error message "Error (Cannot parse savefile) reading 2.8.1 savefile. Loading a 2.8.1 savefile... Too many (3580) artifacts!". After hitting enter, I then get a window that pops up Error "Broken Savefile". Do I have to create a new character and start over? I sure hope not .

Unfortunately, because of the new variables that were added for the player, save files are no longer compatible. It may happen again if I need to add new variables... we'll see how I rewrite the item leveling code, tweak code and mutations.. though I expect that the mutations will need variables as well. So, the save files may not be compatible in the next beta...

Remember the purpose of a beta test it to test the functionality of the game and to make improvements to it, not to try and keep one character around and leveling to 100. That is for the final release For right now we should be testing the game to make sure it works, but if you don't want to be testing the new game there is still a very good variant out there called Newangband 1.7.1 ;D

Of course. That goes without saying. I'm not trying to level to 100. A basic functionality should be the ability to use a character from one release to another. Since it didn't work, I thought it was a bug, hence the reason I posted under Bug Reports. I didn't realize the game functionality was still changing to such a high degree that character useage in the next beta was not possible.
