I just DL'd the 070 version, thinking to give New a try. DL'd the Windows version and LIB files. While running under XP sp2, the app starts, when I select new it crashes with a windows error dialog box.
100% repeatable, I haven't been able to get past it yet. Going to try DLing the DOS version next and see if that runs.

Err, that was 170... doh!
DOS version will not run under XP at all as it cannot generate the necessary .pif files.
Ahh welll...

That is very strange... I tried the Windows version on Windows XP, and it worked fine. A friend of mine also tried it on XP, and it worked fine as well. I don't know what to do... I don't have this bug... When does it crash exactly? When you select "New" in the menu, or when you're done creating the character?
As for the DOS version, I know it doesn't work fine in Windows XP, but the Windows version should work. I really don't understand why it doesn't work...

When does it crash exactly? When you select "New" in the menu, or when you're done creating the character? quote] It crashes as soon as I conduct any actions in the File menu. As soon I select New from the File menu I get the error. The error is always the same. If you need I can send the entire error file. I am going to try to force feed NA a char savefile, currently it cannot handle any of the save files from the *bands I have on my comp. (NPP, POS, O, Steam, Heng, Tome) BUT it seems to go further with a savefile, it closes after displaying a bad savefile box. Says it wants a 2.8.1 file so i am off now to find/make one if I can. Error Generated is as follows:angband.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. Errorsignature AppName: angband.exe AppVer: 0.0.0.0 ModName: unknown ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 00656c69 Exception Information Code: 0xc0000005 Flags: 0x00000000 Record: 0x0000000000000000 Address: 0x0000000000656c69

It won't work, NewAngband will never load files from another variant. I'm quite embarassed with your bug, as the systems I tested it on were Windows XP, and with service pack 2 as well. And it worked fine with no errors. It might be something with your computer....

Only things, apps, running are IE6.0 and ZoneAlarm Security Suite. Will turn those off and try again, but cannot imagine how they would interfere. Time to haul out the olde ritual gear and try to find the god of gaming glitches, *band division, and see what I need to do to appease them... ;D

DOH!! Completely forgot about trying this, set the compatibility mode to Win98 level and now it starts just fine. Will be interesting though, I NEVER use the tile sets and there seems to be no option to turn off the tiles, heh heh. Learning curve time...

It's good that you found the solution to this bug! Hope it will also help others! As for the graphics, if you don't want them, just go in the graphics menu, and uncheck Adam's Bolt tiles. You will see the good old ASCII chars! (in fact, even with graphics on, there are still some ASCISS chars. And if you use the monster generator, A LOT of ascii chars!)

Right click on the application, and choose properties. Look in the various tabs, there should be an option to run a program in compatibility mode. You can select which OS you want compatibility with(Win 95, Win 98, DOS, Win NT, etc....).
I have yet to learn the cause of this bug... I have a Win XP partition on my computer, and NewAngband runs fine, and I didn't have to use compatibility mode. That's strange...
