And i think it's a bug: weapon branding damage isn't returned now by magic-returning elites\bosses. Nope, no bugs here. Otherwise, that would make branded weapons more of a pain than a real help.

Bad Experience gain: I thought even though Variaz said it was a feature there was something a bit buggy about xp gain and just now I think I have proved that...I just cleared the first floor of the basement of higher level (10th-12th level mainly) goblins and orcs with my 9th level blade dancer and gained no kills no experience for any of them. Also got another error message like the one in the above post when exiting the dungeon downward (to the next level). Blade Dancer huh? So you're playing the Monster race. I wonder if that's not part of the problem... I haven't played it yet in 0.3, so I wonder if the bug isn't Monster-related...

I think it doesn't have the SPECIAL_GENE flag, that's why. Problem is if you put it, the ability won't work anymore. This can be fixed easily though...
The Animated Knight do have SPECIAL_GENE. Besides, since it wouldn't be made of an actual item, I don't even think it's attacks would hurt you. It's base stats without the ability aren't too high either.

OK just did the first level of the basement again and no xp or class kills at all from the goblins all of whom are equal or greater level than my devlin mage. Seems like a pattern here...Im guessing it has something to do with the level of the dungeon based on what you said about class kills previously.

Actually, this is due to you also not gaining xp for killing non-unique quest monsters. It has been made this way to prevent abuses, as in most quests, monsters will infinitly respawn until you beat the boss or find whatever you're supposed to find.

Ah ok thanks for clarifying that...perhaps that should go in the online help? I think its abit inelegant but I understand the reason now. It never occured to me to abuse it, or that killing the mobs who in theory anyway pose a threat to you would even constitute abuse. BUT there is a bug here anyway When each floor is complete there is a problem with some of the event handlers in the LUA script. Im not familiar enough with the scripts to debug it myself but I keep seeing the messages popup. Ive completed that section a few times now in .3 and noticed the error each time.

That's strange, I don't get any errors with my character. Then again, I haven't tried playing a Monster yet in 0.3. So I'll have to try that too.

Im not playing a monster at the moment...Ive been trying a lot of different character archtypes to see what fits my style in this game. Currently Im running a demon mage summon/dark elementalist. Not too thrilled but then none of my characters in .3 have worked very well. There is always something that kills me when I least expect it...
like my summoned Jindar Soldier who was fighting a boss monster for me...got hit by the boss and suddenly turned around and evicerated me with his broadsword...4hits and I was a goner... didnt see that coming. The message said he got angry (with me I guess) when the boss hit him. Didnt he see that in the contract when he signed it? "Might take damage from hostiles...The summoner is indemnified for all liability..." guess not :/
The reason I keep starting over is that equipment becomes harder and harder to replace as I keep dying and the drops from mobs are seriously lacking in this version. Not sure if thats my dumb luck or just an intentional downgrading. Made it through the whole first chapter this time with no deaths...then died in the ruins to a renegade summons :/ So summoner is out....not sure what Ill try next now that my favored choices have soured.

Wow... Don't be so pessimistic... No builds are invincible, and Portralis is a tough variant. Don't give up. Summoners can be very good, but you do have to be careful when combining summons and elemental magic. That's part of the risk of playing a summoner. Also, did you raise charisma and leadership? These are key stats to raise for a summoner. As for equipment, I think it's just fine. And don't forget to take a look at the black market, it often has good stuff up to depth 39 items. You can get some nice magic items there that usually aren't that expensive. Or, if your dex is high, you can try stealing... Don't give up just because you die once in a while, that's part of the game. And don't worry about stupid deaths, even I gets them quite often, and I believe most roguelike players gets them too. So don't give up, enjoy the game, and don't feel bad just because you die. Everyone does.

let me address your points 1 at a time... 1. I do not enjoy feeling let down or pessimistic about a game. 2. I had no difficulties with elemental + summons spells clashing. my deaths have been due to summon monsters inexplicably turning on me without provocation. I am well aware attacking a friendly makes them hostile and have taken care not to. 3. leadership 10...charisma not so much...put all the stats into Int to get to high mage (didnt realize there were no abilities Id want there until it was too late and I spent the points Id saved) I went summon rather late in the build (10th level or so) because I was unhappy with the way the character was working as an elementalist and Ive enjoyed using summons in other games. 4. Blackmarket has consistantly had nothing I could a) afford b) use. 5.dying once in awhile would be ok...once every 20minutes not so much. 6. Its hard to not feel bad when you consistantly fail at something that other people seem to be quite successful at. Particularly in this game where my best character has gotten to 13th level... which seems to be the point where the game gets insanely hard to beat.
I will note that I put a post in the tips/strategy section thread you made for me hoping for advice that helps...and as I said there I am feeling pessimistic not without reason I think.

I can acknowledge the bug with summoning: Any summoned monster becames angry if gets hit from any source - this makes summoning almost useless in current release

Any sources huh? Hmmm...I bet it's that code in elements.lua. I probably forgot to add a check from where did the source came from.

Well, one who finding cheats will always find them There are no more XP for quest monsters but two guardians near devlings guild are not quest mosters - so I used them to became GunMaster with just 500 gunshots

You're right, town is not considered a quest. This one could be easily fixed by putting a depth level of 1 to the lancer/viper mercenaries(they are at 12 right now).
