I am a newbie and have a question about how to get my defense skill to 100 so that I can become a defender. I don't want to put 10 skill points per level into the defense skill just to get a defender at lvl. 10.
How could I do that relatively early on, since I won't find levelables for awhile, I assume. (I am a lvl. 2 warrior now and just explored the rat cave.)
Thanks.

Welcome to the forums, and thanks for trying out the game. If you want an early Defender, you might want to go for a Dwarf as your race, since they get a bonus to Constitution and Defense. Use a specialized weapon skill since they are more powerful than the Fighting skill(Axes are good for a dwarf, they get a bonus in that too) and so will require less points to be effective, and you might want to buff Defense every 2-3 levels. Look for armors that might give you bonus to Defense. For the Constitution, look for Rings of Constitution, which will give you a solid +20 to the stat. A tip I can give you is that you only need the prerequisites to change into the class. Once you've changed, feel free to remove your gear. So even if you find an unattractive Cloth, but it has a bonus to Defense/Constitution, keep it. You can then wear your junk for the class change, and then revert to your normal gear. That said, don't be scared to increase Defense and Constitution. (and Magic Defense, and Agility). Defense, Agility and Magic Defense are probably the most important skills, and Constitution the most important stat. ALL characters needs them. You're still early in the game, but you will find out that enemies can be quite brutal, and you need to be tough enough to face them. High strength and a powerful weapon won't be of much help if you get one-shotted by the dragon's fire breath...

More questions:
1. I think to_h is to hit. to_d is to defense (dodging?) or is it to damage? What is to_a?
2. If I wear items that increase my int/wis. before I gain a level and my int/wis. are a multiple of 12, will I get an extra skill point?
3. Also, how does speed work? I am at speed -1 (dwarf). What does speed affect, exactly? Does it allow you to get more turns in combat?
Thanks.

to_h is to_h, to_d is to damage. to_a is to AC(your armor)
What version are you playing? Because it's been a long time now that Int/Wis no longer grants extra skill points. If you're playing 0.5, and I think even 0.4, this should no longer be the case. 0.5 earns you a static +10 skill points every levels, regardless of int/wis.
Speed allows you to get more turns compared to the enemies. If you have a bonus, you will sometime move, and notice that enemies don't. The reverse is true. If your speed is low, you'll notice that sometimes, when you move, enemies will get more than one action. Speed is therefore very good, but be aware of the diminishing returns. +10 to speed is a significant advantage. +20 is great, but the difference isn't as big. +30 is nice, but it's about the point where speed benefits reaches most of it's potential. From there on, the benefits are less noticeable. At +60, you'll notice only minimal benefits. +80 is where you reach maximum benefits. Though you CAN raise it above that, there is no gains in doing so.
Don't worry too much about the Dwarf's -1 to speed. It may be slightly annoying early on, but once you find speed items, you'll make up for it in no time. The dwarf's nice defensive bonus more than make up for that -1 in speed, which is a non-issue later on.

I am playing 5 alpha 2.1
I thought that int and wisdom stats increased skill points because I looked under the help files when I opened the game. They are obviously outdated. So is wisdom ONLY for wisdom-casting? Or does it also increase resistance to effects? At what level does this happen?
Thanks.

One more question:
How do I recognize artifacts? Will they always be at least purple in colour? If I identify them, I assume it would tell me I need to identify them some more.
Thanks.

Class change question:
1. If I change classes, can I still increase abilities that relate to my old class as well as increasing the abilities of the class I switched to? Can I go back to a previous class?
Thanks.

The help files are outdated. Some of them are valuable, but things have changed quite a bit... So yes, Wisdom is for wisdom-casting, and currently, there aren't really any effects resisted by Wisdom. Magic Defense is used for resisting most spells.
You will recognize artifacts by their yellow color, and you need an Artifact Identify scroll for identifying them fully.
Once you change class, you'll need to become level 3 in that class to enable class change. But after that, you can change back to your old class, and continue raising abilities of your old class. You have unlimited class changes, and so you can create all sort of combos with your abilities!

I recommend not using Artifact Identify scrolls (expensive much?) and instead use the Identify Spell which fully ids all items (one at a time of course) for a mere 10 mana.

If you can find a book of identify! At one point Variaz said he was going to put them for sale somewhere. Did he? And if so where?

Another question: I am a warrior at lvl. 6 but only class lvl. 2. Do I need 10 class kills per class level? That counts as a class kill?
Thanks.

Another question: I am a warrior at lvl. 6 but only class lvl. 2. Do I need 10 class kills per class level? That counts as a class kill? Thanks. Rob You need a certain amount of TOTAL kills as your class to reach certain class levels. Here it is: Level 2: 15 kills total. Level 3: 30 kills total. Level 4: 60 kills total. Level 5: 100 kills total. Level 6: 150 kills total. ... Level 10: 500 kills total. Class level really doesn't mean much, except level 3(class change enabled), level 6(access to the three level 6 abilities), and level 10(access to the level 10 ability) So you need a total of 30 class kills for class change, 150 for level 6 and 500 for level 10. Cure things like Blindness, Confusion, Fear, etc...
