Who says firearms are the only way to play a ranged character? This guy is quite the powerhouse and carries just 1 bolt for ammunition. The secret was in using returning ammunition. Your weapon doesn't become unloaded when you fire returning ammo. So, my 1 shot crossbows get 5 shots each, for 10 shots a round and never a need to reload. When you get 70 base points in shooting skill (which Kelly has), then ALL ammo is returning, from the skill feat. Firearms can never be returning, as far as I can tell, either with returning ammo (it doesn't exist) or with the skill feat, which doesn't work with firearms. Now, we all know that firearms do more damage than crossbows, right? The damage gap between firearms and crossbows is closed by 2 things... the 60 base points in crossbow skill you get a feat that doubles the damage you do with crossbows. Also, because my ice bolt returns, I can actually level my ammo, and it gets those damage dice bonuses every 15 levels. I get around resistances and boss immunities by using enhance ranged weapons ability to make my crossbows do missile type damage. I get around blocking counters with the accurate shots ability, which also boosts damage from all ranged attacks passively, very nice. With 10 AP in enhance ranged weapon and the rest - 17 AP and counting - in accurate shots, I can't remember the last time 1) a monster resisted 100% 2) a monster took 0 damage due to boss immunity 3) I missed a monster 4) a monster blocked Now, I don't have any way to do area effect damage, but I do get 10 shots a round so that is kind of like area effect damage, it might even be better... you can kill monsters in any direction, not just ones that are in the same general area of each other. So, my offense is really impressive. My defense sucks though. I need more of pretty much every kind of defense... HP, AC, Magic defense. I have been neglecting defense, because I wanted to get the skill feats in shooting and crossbow. Honestly with so much ranged damage that can't be resisted, immune from, or blocked, I haven't needed hardly any defense so far. I know those days are numbered so I plan to focus on defense quite a bit now with item levels. I still have 6 slots that have yet to be made levelable, so there is lots of potential for this character to fill in nicely. Thoughts, comments, criticisms all very welcome. The only code changes I made for this character were: 1) the extra shots from equipment fix that I put in the Bugs in 08 build 003 thread over in the bugs forum. 2) I made viper crossbows 1 handed for 2 reasons: a) the description of them that the armorer gives is that they are basically upgraded light crossbows, which are one handed... why would an upgrade require more hands? that would make it a downgrade. b) they are lighter than light crossbows... makes sense they would be one handed like light crossbows are.

Yay, another Kobold! Nice offense indeed, and making the viper crossbow one-handed is a good idea, and will be so officially in the next release. However, the low hp is definitely going to be a problem, especially with only 24 magic defense. One careless move and it's all over, you'll have to play VERY carefully. You'll want to dedicate your next levelables to Constitution, life bonus and perhaps Defense, and get a better armor. Otherwise, nice build! You've proven that crossbows can be quite good.

Some thoughts about your build : 1.Why you don`t carry crystal or musical instrument in you empty slot ?You can buy at black market instrument with good bonuses even if you don`t using music(Or you can enchant crystal with scroll of magic item). 2.With spellcraft 30 you`ll get splash damage for every shot. 3.Put at least 1 point in Counter Shot - VERY useful passive ability.

This, however, would be a bug if it indeed works with ranged attacks. It's only supposed to affect magic attacks.

So this is Kelly, now level 30. He is a lot of fun to play, and he is also much more defensive than before, although still a powerhouse with offense. He has +65 speed before haste, which comes in handy. One thing I have noticed... I am pretty sure that spellcraft affects damage done with a ranged attack. My crossbows both do missile damage, so I don't know if spellcraft effects ranged weapons doing physical damage, but I am almost positive that the missile damge I'm doing with my crossbows is being modified by spellcraft. I am purposely not raising spellcraft, but my gloves are Namira's Arcana, and the have a base +15 to spellcraft, so I am seeing what looks like a difference between what my damage should be (looking at the character screen) and the damage that is being shown each time I shoot in the lower right hand of the main screen. I spent some time in random dungeons to get to level 30 and get my equipment and level it up. I wanted to be more than ready when I dive in the twisted temple and take on Quazar. I think I'm more than ready now. Thoughts, comments, criticisms all appreciated.

Generally speaking, unless your build is really suboptimal you should be able to easily handle Quazar by the time you hit level 28. Your character is probably ready to deal with the Simons who are a bit tougher.

Max Hit Points 136563 imho isn't enough for 40-50 level monsters in dungeons after Quazar, but maybe high attack and magic defense 123 gives enough protection. Someone like ninja mistress\ninja queen (especially Boss-edition) can easily penetrate your ac and deal more damage than your max hp. Quazar and twisted temple definitely have no chance - Quazar have only life so will likely be killed with one shot.
Don't you want wear shield instead of second crossbow? With your extremely DEX it will give you very high blocking chance.

Confirmed the reports that spellcraft indeed affect ranged damages AND radius!! It also affect throw items.
This is now fixed, of course. This can be done by going in ranged.lua, and before the various "fire_ball" functions, you can add:
ignore_spellcraft = TRUE
And add ignore_spellcraft = FALSE after the fire_ball function call.
You'll also have to change the ability "High Velocity Fanning" in abilities.lua, but the other should be fine if you've changed all functions of ranged.lua.

Um..... Can magic ammos get returning as a trait? I thought it could.... The points in shooting could have been used elsewhere if you could get returning ammos somewhere. I'm not sure though... I've never gotten far enough to see any returning ammos.

Ack. I wasn't talking about conjured ammo and the shooting feat...
What I meant was if the special ammos you find off of elites and bosses can have the returning trait on them. No shooting skill involved.
Should I be asking this somewhere else?

I see. Magic ammos will not gain returning. If the ammo doesn't naturally have it, it won't gain it.
Probably the wrong place since it's a general question, and not something in regards to that character build.
