Well, I said I would make a Warrior/Defender build, and I did, and it's starting to be quite good. So here it is!
This build uses the Battle Skill ability, which converts to_hit to to_d for nice damages increase. As such, Dexterity pays off a lot for this build, because not only does it increases hit rate, it also increases damages quite a bit. Swords, at 50 points, also doubles the to_hit, making the damages even higher, and making swords the ideal weapon for Battle Skill users. And since Kobolds gets a bonus on both Dexterity and Swords(as long as you use them single-handed), this was a good choice for the race for this build.
Counter Attack, even with just one point, is very useful, as it allows for some crowd-control, and the attacks are not returned by physical returning enemies, making it useful against elites and bosses. And due to the character's high defensive power, this only makes Counter Attack even better.
Defensive Evasion, despite having been nerfed as mentionned in the thread about Defender abilities, is still very powerful. With many skill points spent in Defense, this also raises Agility and Magic Defense, and gives this kobold very high AC, speed and jumping ability. And good at avoiding magic attacks!
Armored Might also has been nerfed as mentionned in the Defender thread, and without that nerf, Virgam's strength would probably have been 1000+. But even with that, would you say no to a strength of 299? 299 strength + 171 dex means counters can be overcomed fairly easily, blocking ability becomes very strong(making Counter Attack even better!) and damages becomes very high.
Hexblaze Strike is Vengeful Orc's ability, and a nice source of fire elemental damages that has a chance of bypassing counters based on Misfortune. At 5 points, it does double damages, and is useful against physical immune enemies and as a combat feat ability in general. The chance to bypass counters, even with just 34 Misfortune, is nice to have.
Equipment-wise, there's still some work to do. The Irom Helm and Iron Boots definitely needs to be replaced by steel, ice or mithril, and needs to be levelable. The altered cloak and lantern are starting to be outdated as well. Shield could be better and levelable, and so do the gauntlets. I will need to get either an instrument or a crystal, and make it levelable to completely fill my inventory.
For the future, I will look into putting points into Shield Mastery, which has been improved to raise Defense, and will make the already great blocking ability of this character even greater. And with 10+ points, magic blocking will be extremely useful, especially with the high strength and dex. That, and an equipment upgrade for the items that are obsolete, should make the character capable of holding his own in the lower depths.
Right now, Virgam the Kobold Defender can beat depth 40+ monsters rather easily, and will soon reach depth 50. His toughest foes so far have been Phantom of Misery and Violet Nightmare, as can be expected from a character with Misfortune, but he can beat them(the katana has been enchanted using Violet's lichalhyd). Since I'm really into this character, I will probably start making depth 50+ enemies, and continue the main quest a bit, so there will be more stuff in the next release.
