First, let me say that I've just recently renewed my interest in *band games, and, while it took a while for me to "get into" this variant, it's definitely started to grow on me now that I've gotten a feel for the gameplay. Next, I've encountered a couple issues I wanted to ask about: 1) I can't seem to quite grasp how to learn magic. Reading the books ('G')seems straightforward enough, and adding skill points to the magic skills presented no problem. But once I've done that (I tested with a divination spellbook,) I can't seem to get the option to cast the spell. Neither 'M' nor 'p' nor (tried in desperation) 'U' nor 'K' seem to bring up the option despite having been told that I learned the spell. Am I missing something blindingly obvious? 2) I've descended to the "Bottom Floor" of the Fidac ruins. After defeating the first set of enemies and exploring the rooms, I went south and...off the bottom of the screen. By fumbling around blindly, I could hit the two switches that I found (and almost get my arse handed to me by the Phantom Warrior after the switch on the left) but I still can't see anything. Resizing the window doesn't work, nor does changing font or tile width/height. I'm wondering if this is a feature or a bug? If it's a feature designed to frustrate the player, well...it works. But if it's a bug, is there a fix? Fumbling around blindly, using the M key to get a very general sense of where I am, doesn't seem to get me any closer to figuring out what to do next. Edit: I meant to add that I'm on Vista, which has caused problems with other *band variants (I've had to go in and manually restore all terrain defaults (up to 250 of them.) But that was purely an ASCII issue, not a tiles or window size one.

Welcome. Glad you like the game. 1) magic is learned by reading books and then building spells. Using the 'M' menu. You choose a spell slot from a) to l) though you will select a number from 1-12 when making the spell. (You can expand on this with the Highmage ability but its really not necessary as 12 slots is plenty for all the spells you'll need at a given time.) then when you want to cast a spell press M again and if above ground c then the slot letter of your spell or if in a dungeon just press M and then the slot letter. 2) the Fidac ruins bug is an unfortunate side affect (and well documented bug) of the center on player feature in the options. It is now mandatory to have that option on because otherwise the screen will NOT refresh when you go off the edge. I am not sure why V did that but needless to say it is annoying but not game breaking. To get to the options hit '=' then I believe its either 1, 3 or 5 for the options list with that option in it. Once you turn it on leave it on because as annoying as constant centering may be (it really makes it unenjoyable to cross large areas for me for example) it is a necessary evil to avoid the Fidac Ruins bug among others. Good luck and have fun (Check the tips and strategies section if you need hints or spoilers.)

If you want the ASCII chars, edit the file \lib\user\graf-new.prf and clear it's content. Then, enable graphics mode, and you'll get 100% ASCII tiles, but in "graphics" mode, thus working fine on Vista.

Thanks. The centering technique worked (I've never cared for centering either, so I've always left it off.) Now I just have to figure out the proper order of the switches, heh.
The magic problem still seems to be an issue. When I press M, I just get my racial power (I'm playing a Monster demon, Lesser Rhyzendalian in this case.) Does it matter how many points I have in the skills? I created a test run and put 15 in spellcraft and 20 in Alteration to try a Life Blast spell (since that was the spellbook I had in my inventory at the time.) I read it and it disappeared, so I assume the actual learning part is taken care of.
As for the ASCII issue, I actually never liked graphic tiles before, but am getting used to them here because, thankfully, the monsters are all still ASCII. That was always my biggest issue.
If y'all are feeling patient, I do have other questions. For starters, since I'm currently playing a Monster demon, is there any form that I will eventually be able to evolve into that will have an essence slot, or can/should I just turn off essence gathering because they'll never be of any use to me? I've been keeping the interesting ones, but they're starting to pile up....

Hmmm the magic thing sounds like a bug. I haven't done anything with the monster race this build so I am woefully unprepared to answer your questions in that regard BUT 'M' Should work as I said in terms of building spells. For casting I believe Monsters use 'P' only since they have no priestly abilities.
I believe the 'u' form is completely humanoid but as I said I haven't bothered with the monster races this build and its been many months since I did play one. I don't even recall if I did use 'u' at all. My favorite monsters are dragons though there are plenty of strange and interesting possibilities.

Hopefully it's not a bug and I'm just incompetent because I've only had limited success with pure melee-based characters in other games. And I finally got enough choices for an evolution that I found a demon that had essence slots (at the cost of armor and cloak slots, which isn't an inconsiderable loss but I do enjoy the essences so I'm not all that bothered.) So that answers that.

Use "p" for regular spells. For Monsters, it's Int-based, not Wis.

Okay, I've been playing for a bit now and have a level 27 Rhy-something or another Cold Lord. I figured out why spell creation wasn't working -- I was attempting it in dungeons and there was no message about "only in town" as there is with class changes -- and getting smacked around by the occasional nightmare (can they be beaten? how?)
Now I'm on level 23 of some random wilderness dungeon. I went down to a "final level"...and there was no final enemy waiting for me. I seemed to be pretty much stuck there. Luckily, I hadn't saved, so I could just open the save-file again. I tested it a few times but there was no enemy. Glitch? Part of the game? A result of something I did wrong?

Do not pickup red items until you are ready to meet nightmares - beating them is possible, but you need something like full set of blue items for this. About no final enemy - looks like a bug. Never encountered this one.

I've just been teleporting away whenever I see a nightmare near. I did so like one red item I had, but have just been leaving any I've found in my home for the time being. And the no-boss thing is perplexing. The last one I faced was a 'C' of some sort (I don't recall the name) that kept teleporting and had an extra life. Very annoying, actually.

Are you playing the latest version? I'm pretty sure I've fixed the no final enemy bug before... unless I've fixed it in this release that isn't uploaded yet...
Didn't encounter it either.

The most current version is 0.3.8 though by my count it is really 0.4.0

Okay, thanks. Downloaded the latest (and the conversion patch.) Honestly, I'm not normally so clueless as to miss something as obvious as that. :/
I assume my old save-files will be invalid?

A couple more questions (I hope I'm not getting annoying here):
1) I've been looking over the builds other people have submitted and wonder -- what is the advantage of raising defense over agility? Agility seems not only to be more popular, but actually more useful overall.
2) Is there any way to recall to the "random dungeon" levels (the ones in the wilderness?) My word of recall scrolls only seem to work with the "special" dungeons, andwhen one is last on level 29 and return to level 5 the next time one enters the dungeon, it gets a bit time-consuming -- even with scumming because the entrance jumps all over the screen when you go down and back up to the wilderness again.
