Nope to both. First time I did it, I did jump straight from the surface to the bottom... and ended up in the Jindar sewers. Second and subsequent times, I made sure to enter the stairs at the surface before jumping down, and taking the stairs up from the random-quest before going into a new dungeon and jumping back down again.
The times I ran into 'You cannot open this door', there just wasn't any boss to kill. Once, there were some monsters, but none named, and the last, well, there just wasn't anything there. *shrugs* I could probably retest it, but right now it seems to be working again for whatever reason. I'll keep saving before going into the quest incase it hangs again -- maybe it was just a one-time fluke or somethin'...
Later EDIT: Ah ha! Hang happened again, and this time I've got save -- and it's even repeating! Should I send to the hotmail account?

I do not understand why but I can not get .3 to work on my machine.
(specs: 2.6ghz cpu, 40ghd, 256m ram, about 6 years old. has had no problems with any other bands)
The error occurs on start up. The initial install would crash on File | 'New'. Subsequent installations from new downloads at the main site dont even load the news or initialize arrays. They crash on File | 'New' as well but otherwise the windows are blank.
I sent an email directly to Variaz but wondered if anyone here has had this experience as well as myself.

Worked fine for me yesterday when I created a new character to test the new potions stuff. Anyone else experiencing this? Also, Frumple, I did encounter one crash on a random dungeon as well. Two things I'm thinking: - Generating something out of bounds. - Trying to place a monster on a monster. Though it normally shouldn't happen, if a monster has the "FRIENDS" flag, it will generate a pack of monsters. So if a hound is generated, it will come with it's whole pack. Then if another monster tries to be placed on a grid with a hound...it will probably crash.

Ok I think I have kicked the bug to the curb. It seems that the zip file might be a little buggy for xp. I decided after taking apart everything else that maybe the extraction method might be at fault. I noticed a file (.directory) artifact in the folder that shouldnt exist and so when looking in the zip archive, I selected some files (the ones that made sense for the operation of the game, and manually moved them to a new folder on the hd and the game starts just fine...still dont know why the zip file doesnt work right but I recommend a self extractor to avoid this. ==Edit== Apparently I spoke too soon...Played one starting game..died and then the game opened in the blank mode with no ascii showing up at all. Opening my dead character showed the graphic tiles but nothing else. No ascii anywhere in the game window...also none in the inventory/equip window. so I deleted and redownloaded the game yet again (umpteenth time here today and getting d**ned sick of it to be truthful...) The game window opens in blank mode and there seems to be no fix I can find for it. If you have any suggestions please make them soon. ==ReEdit== Ok so I tinkered around *fuming the entire while* for a bit and then realized why the ascii wasnt showing up. SOMETHING was preventing it in the ini file. So I tinkered with the settings until I got the ascii text working again and then opened the ini file after removing the read only flag and made sure the settings that I want were in there. So now we shall see if the game works the next time I restart it.

Ok onto a real bug report here. (I think) Playing a Mage turned Pally I noticed that the Class level kills do not go up on every kill over your player level. Im level 9 and killing level 9 and 10 creatures but the class kill counter has only gone up twice in over 30 qualified monsters. Either the monster levels stated are wrong? or the counter is malfunctioning? or do I not understand correctly how the class leveling thing works?

If it's 0.3, I've added one more constraint. If the monster's depth level is 4 times less than your character's level, you won't gain any experience or class kills. This is to prevent farming too many levels out of worm masses and other weak enemies.

ah ok and here I thought it was a bug...too bad the mobs are so far out of depth then...level 1 depth mobs on level 5..etc...but that means as you level you have dive deeper than you can survive to gain levels eventually...or am I not getting the jist of this constraint? I mean I barely survive as a level 10 on level 5/6...level 10 would be suicidal ...and this problem will only get worse as I gain levels. Has it been at all a problem for anyone else?

Having trouble surviving at level 10 on depths 5 and 6?? Hmmm... then your character might have some deficiencies. Especially if you're still playing your 0.2.1 caster character, as casters are usually easy to start with. Or perhaps your equipment is starting to be outdated, and it's time to replace it.
Also, remember the defensive skills(Defense, Agility and Magic Defense). These skills are essential for almost any character builds, even mages. If all you do is invest in your build's offensive skill(either a weapon skill, ranged weapon skill, Spellcraft/Elemental,etc...), you'll find out that you will die pretty quickly. Constitution is also helpful, it makes a big difference, especially early on.
You could also dump your character, and post it in the characters builds section, so we can take a look at it, and point out what's wrong.

What is wrong is Im a terrible Band player as I mentioned to you in my introduction email. My character builds usually are fine...but when one continually forgots about returning monsters one gets what one deserves I think. [==Edit== just died in fact (on level 5 again to a wandering blade dancer whom I ran into literally was just being absent minded and she beat me senseless with 8 or 9 hits.)] Also I did not port over my original .21 characters as I didnt want to push the boundaries of the game's stability... you never said whether it was a good idea or not when I asked. As far as deficiences go...just a bit of bad luck is usually all. Ive found 2 artifacts in all the character builds Ive had in Portralis and both were on .21. I tend to have trouble finding spell books on casters and good weaponry/armor on fighters. This is just the irony of being me I think. When I get a character build IM not too embarassed to post, I will

Another bug: Got bullets...equipped them.. got some more.. went back to town...ided both...one set had +1 to intelligence as its bonus..the other group had +1 to magic defense. I decided Id rather have magic defense (on my pally) and equipped the 2nd group. The two groups combined into one with the magic defense bonus staying and the intelligence bonus going...seems like an abusable bug if you find a particular good ammo to do this with and want to replenish the supply.

Bad Experience gain:
I thought even though Variaz said it was a feature there was something a bit buggy about xp gain and just now I think I have proved that...I just cleared the first floor of the basement of higher level (10th-12th level mainly) goblins and orcs with my 9th level blade dancer and gained no kills no experience for any of them.
Also got another error message like the one in the above post when exiting the dungeon downward (to the next level).

no expierience for non-unique quest monsters is ok.
And i think it's a bug: weapon branding damage isn't returned now by magic-returning elites\bosses. So weapon with brand became universal weapon against elites\bosses: the only problem is physical returning, but even in this case brand damage will kill monster before player die)
